Empty Nest

Once it was noisy, couldn't hear yourself speak

You longed for quiet, as it reached its peak.

And how many times, had you packed your bags

Same old arguments, led to constant nags.

Refereeing children, trying to keep the peace

Cooking for hordes, a family feast.

Coming home from work, 12 hour shifts

Then organising outings, and sorting a rift.

One by one, they all disappear

Along came silence, no one near.

Now you long for laughter, and the inane chat

They visit sometimes, but have to go back.

You feel like a burden, a chore to be done

No longer a Mother, whose needed by Sons
